Statement of Significance
Lake Batyo Catyo was originally a swamp. As part of the Wimmera Mallee domestic and stock supply water system the swamp was converted into a storage basin known as Lake Batyo Catyo in 1914. After the completion in 1953 of Rocklands Reservoir, west of the Grampians, its waters contributed to the 4,770-megalitre off-stream buffer storage at Lake Batyo Catyo on which there were additional works in 1961.
Lake Batyo Catyo Avon Plains is historically and scientifically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the Wimmera-Mallee stock and domestic water supply system which grew to become one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Lake Batyo Catyo Avon Plains is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It has been a district recreational destination and is valued and recognised by the Avon Plains community.
