NEW FEDERAL MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Federal Timber and Case Co., which originally worked in the vicinity of Starvation Creek, obtained new cutting rights to the east of the Ada River Sawmilling Co. area and commenced operations in 1934. The company was not allowed to use the Victorian Hardwood Co. tramlines through to Powelltown and was forced to build a three foot gauge tramway to Big Pat's Creek where the timber was taken on existing lines to La La Siding. The mill exclusively supplied timber for barrel staves and had an unusual drum saw for this purpose.Heritage Inventory Description
NEW FEDERAL MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Large, multi-faceted site which includes the remains of a mill and evidence of settlement. The mill site consists of reinforced concrete foundations, timber tramways on log supports, sleepers with dog spikes, iron pipes and chimneys, saw dust blowers and some cable. Excavation for underfloor machinery remains. The supporting timber struts of the mill roof are still standing and clearly define the site. Approximately 100 metres from the mill are two huts, in original but deteriorating condition, one being in a fair state, the other, poor. In the second hut the interior is open to the elements and is decaying rapidly. A timber roof underlies the corrugated iron on each hut and brick paving remains at the door of the lower hut.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. Example of a rare type of bush sawmill, that is for cutting barrel staves only. There are extensive remains at the mill site, including, unusually, hut sites.
