Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
No. 60 Mercer Street is of historical and architectural significance to the Borough of Queenscliffe. It is of historical significance as an example of a small, commercial premises erected in the township in the late 1870s. The original shop component is also significant for retaining key elements of its original architectural character, despite its adaptation to a residential property, and other modifications. It is additionally representative of late-1870s commercial developments in Queenscliff, with its facade and entrance directly on the street.

60 Mercer Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
60 Mercer Street has random rubble share walls, a stucca parapetted facade, with a cornice and a simple pitched roof. The facade has bas-relief trabeation, which was originally picked out in a deep colour against the light coloured walls(4) and stuccoed chimney which have the typical caved cornice seen in Queenscliff during this period.
With the exception of the door, the building has changed little, although, like 66 Learmonth Street, a timber residence has been added to the south side early this century.
60 Mercer Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 2
Extract from the 2009 study
No. 60 Mercer Street is a single-storey building, with a rendered masonry facade to Mercer Street, and exposed (overpainted) random rubble walls to the visible side elevation. It has no setback to the street. The pitched roof runs from the front to the back of the building behind a parapetted facade, with cornice; the stuccoed chimneys have the typical coved cornice seen in Queenscliff during this period. The window and door openings are placed asymmetrically in the facade, with a different form and proportion to the windows flanking the doorway. The facade also has bas-relief trabeation, which was originally picked out in a deep colour against the light coloured walls.[i]
As with No. 66 Learmonth Street, a timber residence was added to the south side in the early twentieth century. This also has an entrance directly off Mercer Street, with no setback. Additions have also been made to the rear of the property which have resulted in a mix of different roof pitches and styles.
