Sandy- The only horse to return from WW1

24/12/18

In the First World War 136,000 "walers' were sent abroad. Only one horse was returned to Australia. Sandy was Major General William Bridges horse. When General Bridges was killed at Gallipoli in 1915, he became the only soldier whose body was returned. He is buried in Canberra. In 1918 Sandy was returned to Australia and was turned out to graze at the Maribyrnong Remount Depot. He died 1923.[ awm.gov.au] During WW2 I lived in the Ordnance Quarters [Williamson Rd]Maribyrnong & remember the Depot.
