HMAS Londsdale Drill Hall - Veterans Description for Public
The HMAS Londsdale Drill Hall was built on a site compulsorily acquired from the Melbourne Harbour Trust on April 3rd 1941. During the Second World War, economy and speed of construction were the primary concerns. Accordingly, drill halls of this period returned to designs similar to the First World War but were built of weatherboard with corrugated asbestos cement roof. The one exception is HMAS Londsdale which is of unique design in brick with tall west facing windows (the building is now empty). The only remaining timber example is used as a scout hall in Red Cliffs near Mildura. The site was demolished sometime between 1995 - 1999 and is now used for housing.
