The Former Chemist is of historical significance (HERCON criterion A) and aesthetic significance (HERCON criterion E) to the Glenelg Shire.
Why is it significant?
The Former Chemist is of historical significance as it illustrates the continued development of Portland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is also one of the few Victorian shop fronts still extant in Bentinck Street.
The Former Chemist is of aesthetic significance due to its restrained Victorian Classical design and largely intact facade.
