Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCEThe former store of Parker and Company, Iron Merchants, located in Shorts Place, Geelong, was erected c1859 for local merchant, Richard Parker. This distinctive two-storey basalt structure of Italianate style and unknown architectural origins, is one of the last of the bluestone industrial premises of the mid 19th century in Geelong and a fine example of this typology. Richard Parker was a distinguished local identity, Mayor of Geelong and responsible for the "Parkers Penny", an unofficial business token which gained universal acceptance in Geelong and which was minted in the Shorts Place premises.
