Statement of Significance
C6 Amendment - Statement of Significance updated as a result of submission (AW 28/10/08)
What is significant?
The timber and bluestone cottage is located at the north-east corner of Cobb and Burchett and continuing through to Watton Street, facing south on the south side of the township. The cottage takes the vernacular form in the Victorian style, being a single storey, symmetrical timber cottage with a timber verandah across the facade. There are two large bluestone chimneys on the east elevation. The cottage has been extended to the rear with skillion roofed additions. There are substantial outbuildings along the Burchett Street, or western boundary, whichhave been altered externally and interally. There is a substantial and mature garden including two significant trees, a Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Palm) and a Corymbia ficifolia (Flowering Gum). The land on which the cottage stands was taken up in the mid 1850s by Edmund Garston Yorke, a solicitor from Port Fairy, who went on to become the Mayor of Port Fairy in 1867. It is unlikely that the cottage was built by him, but is more likely to have been built after his death, in 1877 by new owners. No architect or builder has been associated with the design. The buildings are in good condition and retain an high degree of integrity.

TIMBER AND BLUESTONE COTTAGE AND TREES - Physical Description 1
A single storey timber cottage with a timber verandah across the facade. The cottage is symmetrical with a central front door flanked by two sash windows. The original timber verandah posts have been replaced with steel posts, and the original timber decking was replaced with concrete slab in the 1970s. There are two large bluestone chimneys on the east elevation. The cottage has been extended to the rear with skillion roofed additions including the addition of a bathroom, laundry and toilet during the 1980s.
There are substantial outbuildings along the Burchett Street, or western boundary, which have long been associated with the cottage. These buildings have been extensively renovated in the 1970s, but still contribute to the overall significance of the place. On an adjacent block,a timber coach house and stables, associated with the cottage survive. These are now held in separate ownership to the cottage.
There is a substantial and mature garden including a significant specimen of Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Palm)and a significant Corymbia ficifolia (Flowering Gum), both located to the front of the house.
