Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE:
Important as a rare example of a two storey bungalow, as an example of further sub-division and for its garden, fence and gates.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Jandou
11 Gray Street
This building has local significance for its architectural interest as a rare two storey example of an interwar, weatherboard bungalow with double hung sash windows and half timbering in the gable and for its associations with Martha Graham, for whom it was built in 1937-38. ([i]) Mrs Graham also owned the adjacent brick building on the block, now 13 Gray Street, but previously listed as No. 11 Gray Street. Jandou represents the closer sub-division of large blocks associated with the economic and social changes brought by the First World War. It is comparable to the two storey bungalow at 14 Skene Street which is known to have been built by Reg Williams, Hamilton's most prolific builder. ([ii]) It remains substantially intact and in excellent condition. The garden supports the house and may include remnants from the original garden of 13 Gray Street.
[i] HSA DP No. 593, for Mrs M Graham, dated 1937-38, plans copied for 11 & 13 Gray Street.
[ii] According to Mrs Peg Christie, his daughter.
