What is significant?
The Preston Makedonia Social Club at 231 Broadhurst Avenue, Reservoir was constructed in 1980 by the Makedonia Soccer Club as an extension of their role as a community focal point, established in Preston in 1947. It has been used by the Macedonian community as a community focal point since it was constructed in 1980, extending the function already provided by the Makedonia Soccer Club. The Macedonian community continues their strong presence in Darebin, which has been the case since their arrival in large numbers in the 1950s and 60s.
The Makedonia Soccer Club was the place where Macedonian cultural life was first manifested in Preston, and the social club, from 1980, became an extension of those social and cultural activities.

Why is it significant?
Historically, the Preston Makedonia Social Club at 231 Broadhurst Avenue is significant for the evidence it provides of the Macedonian community in Darebin since the post Second World War immigration boom. It is also historically significant for its association with the Australian government's massive post-war immigration program, which underpinned the growth of Darebin as a suburb of rich cultural diversity. Historically, the Preston Makendonia Social Club is also significant to the City of Darebin as a representative example of the social and cultural activities of the Macedonian and other ethnic communities in Darebin which have contributed to the development of Darebin's rich cultural diversity, in particular from the years following the Second World War to the present. Socially, it is significant as a place where important cultural and artistic traditions such as kulturno-umetnicko drustvo are practiced and maintained for present and future generations. (AHC criterion G.1) The Preston Makedonia Social Club also has potential social significance to the Macedonian community for reasons of spiritual, cultural and social associations, as a community focal point and meeting place.
