Statement of Significance
The Cotswold Valley landscape is of high regional significance within the Dandenong Ranges due to its outstanding visual qualities and proximity to Sherbrooke Forest.
This delightful valley provides a remarkable visual diversity within a very small-scale landscape. The strong contrast of open pasture and the warm red-brown of ploughed fields against the deep rich green of Sherbrooke Forest is heightened by the sense of enclosure provided by the surrounding ridge lines. From some of the higher points along Grantulla and Jacksons Hill Roads magnificent views of metropolitan Melbourne are partially framed by the tree covered valley of Sherbrooke Forest.
The remnants of forest vegetation, generally following the stream lines, add another feature to this landscape. The communities represented in these forest remnants are surprisingly diverse ranging from the fern gully community dominated by Mountain Ash in the north-west corner, to another distinct Mountain Ash association on the slopes to Messmate Stringybark and Mountain Grey Gum woodland on the protected slopes near Hermons Saddle Reserve to the Messmate Stringybark and Narrow-leaf Peppermint woodland on the more exposed slopes near the Black Hill Reserve.
