The circa 1853 house was owned and developed by Edward Twentyman of the prominent architectural firmTwentyman and Askew. It stayed with the family between 1867 and 1996. Ficus palmata is rare in cultivation in Victoria and this impressive tree dominates the Bastings Street frontage of the garden. A second, smaller and poorly formed specimen occurs along the side boundary. Other examples are known at Northern TAFEand private gardens in Caulfield and Hamilton.
