Former Police Lock -up, 54 Newall Street, MARNOO - Physical Description 1
The former Police Station building, 54 Newall Street, Marnoo, has visual connections with other predominantly single storey, horizontal weatherboard residential buildings with pitched galvanised corrugated iron roofs. This building is generally in accord with the form, construction and setbacks of the significant places visually connected to it. It is set on averaged sized allotment for the area and a moderate setback of approximately 5 metres. There is a rudimentary front garden that consists of a concrete path, grassed areas and some shrubs at the side. The front is bound by an introduced tubular steel and cyclone wire fence, approximately 1200 mm high.
The asymmetrical, single storey, double fronted, horizontal weatherboard, Federation styled house is characterised by a recessed hipped roof form, together with gable roofs and a return bullnosed verandah that project towards the front and side. These roof forms are clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron. Two early unpainted red brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the projecting rectangular window bay under the front gable. It has a bank of timber framed double hung windows at the front and sides, with decorative leadlighting in the upper sashes. Another early window is situated under the gable, being of a tripartite composition having a central timber framed double hung window and flanking narrow sidelights.
The other windows are also early, being timber framed and double hung. The front timber framed doorway is also early, and has an early timber and glazed door with sidelights.
Another early feature of the design is the front bullnosed verandah. It appears to be supported by timber columns with a decorative timber fretwork valance and brackets.
An early decorative feature of the design is the gable infill (stucco panelling and battening).
