Statement of Significance
The building at 78 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape. Constructed in 1936 for H.W. Dunkley, solicitor, to a design by the Ballarat architects, Clegg and Morrow, the restrained interwar modern Renaissance styled building is largely intact from the exterior.
The building is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a restrained interwar modern Renaissance style. These qualities include the plain moulded parapet between flanking streamlined piers with stepped Art Deco-like caps. Other intact qualities include the two storey height, rendered brick wall construction, 12 paned steel framed hopper sash window crowned by a simple and flat stylised pediment, incised bands and streamlined rectilinear consoles below the window, cantilevered verandah, timber framed shopfront with timber and glazed door and highlight at one side.
The building is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in St. Arnaud in the interwar period of the twentieth century. It is particularly associated with H.W Dunkley, Solicitor and has been occupied by solicitors since construction. Furthermore it is associated with Ballarat architects Clegg and Morrow.
Overall, the building at 78 Napier Street, St. Arnaud is of LOCAL significance.

Two storey building, 78 Napier Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The Radford Solicitors building, Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes an important architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape.
The two storey, rendered brick, restrained interwar modern Renaissance styled commercial building is characterised by a plain moulded parapet between flanking streamlined piers with stepped Art Deco-like caps. A 12 paned steel framed hopper sash window is a feature of the upper storey facade, and is crowned by a simple and flat stylised pediment. Below the window are incised bands and streamlined rectilinear consoles.
A cantilevered verandah separates the first from the ground floor. The ground floor has an early timber framed shopfront with timber and glazed door and highlight at one side.
