Statement of Significance
The shop at 83 Napier Street, St. Arnaud is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. It is associated with commercial developments in St. Arnaud in the 20th century and demonstrates some important design qualities. These qualities include the tiled shopfront, the rendered facade with windows included in a recessed panel, the banded signboard above the cantilevered verandah and its form and scale in the streetscape.
The building was built for Williams the Shoeman. The architect for the firm in the 1930s to 1950s was Rhys Evan Hopkins. In the obituary written by Neil Clerehan he was described thus: "He was an early convert to Modernism. In those years, the most advances local design was on a par with what was appearing in Europe."
