Former McKellar Building, 174-178 Main Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The former McKellar's building at 174-178 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly Victorian and interwar streetscape.
The symmetrical, three storey, rendered brick, Victorian styled building is characterised by decorative parapet having a central semi-circular and flat title panel with a Coat of Arms relief and the date "A.D. 1878" within. Below the parapet is a projecting moulded and dentillated stringcourse supported at its ends by projecting vermiculation-patterned blocks and paired consoles. Both the first and second floors are characterised by a six-bayed composition of early timber framed double hung windows with flat-arched heads accentuated by smooth rusticated voussoirs. The central keystones above the windows on the first floor are highlighted in a dark tone. The wall planes also feature smooth rusticated wall finishes and a stringcourse separates the first from the second floor.
Separating the first from the ground floor is an introduced, cantilevering skillion verandah. The three-bayed composition of the ground floor shopfront openings appear to be early but are altered.
Beyond the main facade are a number of hipped roof forms, together with a three storey skillion roof, all of which are clad in early galvanised corrugated iron. Other early features of the rear include the face brick wall construction, elongated brick chimneys, and shallow-arched window and door openings, the windows being timber framed and double hung. Accentuating the openings are early red brick voussoirs.
