BANYENA WEIR (RICHARDSON RIVER) BANYENA - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site:
Construction began in 1883 - was completed by 1885/6 at a cost of 1,300 pounds. Built from local timber supplied by I. & J. Hodgson. Repaired by A.J. Pickering - replacing timbers and straightening and strengthening walls, possibly after 1909 (The Great Flood). Concrete abutment added on southern side. Timber structure becomes derelict at an unknown date. Weir silts up burring part of the structure.

BANYENA WEIR (RICHARDSON RIVER) BANYENA - Heritage Inventory Description
Timber weir built between 1883-1885/6 on the Richardson River 1.2 km downstream (north) of Banyena Township. The weir was built by the Wimmera United Waterworks Trust as part of the Swedes Creek Scheme and was one of a series of weirs between Banyena and Donald. The weir is a derelict structure that no longer regulates water flow down the Richardson./n
Heritage Inventory Significance: Locally significant. Banyena Weir was built in response to drought in the early 1880's and was the only substantial reserve of water (local) for some years.
Heritage Inventory Key Components: Derelict timber and stone weir, large earthen embankment, timber and concrete abutments, stone piles, timber fence, concrete foundation, artefact scatter and silt. Heritage Inventory Site Features: 1. Timber weir: piles, bracing, sheeted bins and stone, and cross heads, timber jointed with bolts and nails. 2. Concrete abutment (timbers have been strapped to this) 3. Artificial embankments backed filled with self seed river red gums (Grassed). 4. Timber abutments back filled with stone. 5. Timber wall abutment (can be seen in photograph circa 1886) 6. Timber fence to contain stone "rip rap"? Between third step of weir. 7. Silted containing buried timbers, stone and surface stone, concrete capping. 8. Timbers washed down stream, iron and other materials (eg. Glass, metal fragments).
