FORMER 4-6 WHITEHALL STREET RESIDENCE - History
The Josephs Road precinct lies just north of the Footscray township reserved, suryveyed in 1849. Development of t eprecinct occurred a fter the railway line an dbridge were constructed in teh w1850s. A sugarbeet distillery was constructed in the 1870s, as was tanneries and residences housing workers for the various industries.FORMER 4-6 WHITEHALL STREET RESIDENCE - Interpretation of Site
Current buildings are relatively lightweight with a considerable amount of open space.
FORMER 4-6 WHITEHALL STREET RESIDENCE - Archaeological Significance
There is a potential for the site to produce features and deposits relating to the 1877 residence. It is likely the house was occupied by someone who worked at the local tannery.
FORMER 4-6 WHITEHALL STREET RESIDENCE - Historical Significance
The potential remains of th e19th century house, possibly associated with the industrial use of the area. Remains may also demonstrate the development of Footscray Township.
