WILLIAM WEBB'S CORDIAL AND AERATED WATER'S FACTORY - History
The site of William Webb's Cordial and Aerated Waters Factory was situated behind Webb's residential property on Sackville Street. Webb purchased the property around 1866.His factory was originally located in Victoria Hall, Bank Street, until damaged by fire in 1885. He then built a new factory on Princess Street. An 1887 plan shows three buildings forming part of the factory. Shortly afterwards the lot was sold to Victorian Railway Commissioners as it fell within the easement for the new rail connection to Belfast. The buildings were demolished in the late 1880s.WILLIAM WEBB'S CORDIAL AND AERATED WATER'S FACTORY - Interpretation of Site
The ground appears to have been cut towards the centre of the railway reserve and gently rises up towards the rear yards of the properties fronting Sackville Street. There are patches of bitumen visible which are most likely from the 20th century.
WILLIAM WEBB'S CORDIAL AND AERATED WATER'S FACTORY - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological significance of the site lies in its ability to provide information on the manufacture and bottling of non-alcoholic beverages. The narrow date range of the factory at this location is of interest as any bottle dumps found on the site could be dated to between late 1885 and 1887. This would be useful for dating archaeological deposits containing the same bottles within the region and beyond.
It is possible that the footins of the buildings and other structures associated with the factory are present. There may also be refuse (bottle) pits within the boundaries of the allotment which may have survived the construction of the railway.
WILLIAM WEBB'S CORDIAL AND AERATED WATER'S FACTORY - Historical Significance
The site has some historical significance in that it was one of William Webb's numerous business interests in Port Fairy.
