AARON SHERRITT'S HUT SITE - History
The story of the hut and the owner, Aaron Sherrit has been widely documented as part of the Ned Kelly story, in books, pamphlets, film and on numerous web sites. According to Ned Kelly world (www.nedkellysworld.com.au/history/sherritt.htm):
Aaron Sherritt grew up with Joe Byrne in the Woolshed Valley near Beechworth and eventually fell in with the Kelly's. He had assisted with their raids at Euroa and Jerilderie, but by 1880 his involvement as a double agent became known by both sides, and with the assistance of Detective Ward, eventually led to his demise. In 1880, Aaron Sherritt married a fifteen year old girl named Ellen Barry, and they lived in a hut very close to the home of Joe Byrne's mother.
The El Dorado website (Http://www.albury.net.au/~tim/eldor1.htm) provides the following information regarding the location of the hut:
KELLY GANG
The Kelly gang were often in the Woolshed area, as one of the gang, Joe Byrne and his family lived in Byrne Gully at Sebastopol. From Sebastapol you can see the Kelly Cave where the gang often stayed. There were many Kelly simpathisers in the valley. Aarron Sherrits hut remains are approximately one kilometre towards ElDorado from the Woolshed school site.
The location appears to be well known to the local community (i. e. Stone 1980s), but hasn't been signposted. Based on a photograph of the Sherritt land, in "Kelly Country: A Photographic Journey" (Kelson and McQuilton 2008:127); the slab hut no longer stands but there are exotic trees around the front of the landholding.
AARON SHERRITT'S HUT SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site was not inspected, but based on the site depicted in Kelson and McQuilton 2008 photograph and the condition of the local in general, there is a potential for structural remains and possibly artefactual material of the hut to continue to exist. Photograph in Kelson and McQuilton (2007:127) suggests some exotic vegetation surrounds the former site.
AARON SHERRITT'S HUT SITE - Archaeological Significance
The site of the hut, pending a more precise location, is of regional significance as potentially providing rare access to domestic material and structures associated with the Kelly legend; as well as life on the Woolshed in the late 1870s in general.
AARON SHERRITT'S HUT SITE - Historical Significance
The hut is important through its association with the Ned Kelly legend. Potentially may provide tangible evidence of the Kelly collaborators and associates.
Heritage Inventory Description
AARON SHERRITT'S HUT SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
Open pastoral paddocks and vegetation, located on private land at the current boundary of the Wangaratta and Indigo Shires, at Woolshed (Sebastopol 1870s -1880s). This is the former location of a small slab hut with bark roof belonging to Aaron Sherrit, who was killed by Joe Byrne - one of the Kelly Gang - on 26/6/1880. While the exact location of the hut was not accessed or inspected during the North East awareness project, location is known within the local community and has been photographed for "Kelly Country: A Photographic Journey" (Kelson and McQuilton 2008:127). The photograph, which can be also accessed on the web, suggest that the "slab hut no longer stands but there are exotic trees around the front of the landholding".
