Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Mansfield St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church - Memorial Window Description & History
The foundation stone for St. Francis Xavier Church was laid by the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Reverend Daniel Mannix, DD, on 19 December 1937. The two-light windows throughout the church were diamond quarry leadlights with busts of saints inserted into the upper central portion of each light.Representations of St. Joseph and St. Teresa were inserted into this two-light, with the right-hand St. Teresa, designated to the memory of the AIF men. It is likely that the memorial two-light window installed when the church opened in 1938 and only a year or later the wording of the inscription was to include servicemen of the Second World War.
