Statement of Significance
The Clyde General Store and Post Office at Railway Road, Clyde.
How is it significant?
The Clyde General Store and Post Office is of local historic and social significance to the City of Casey.
Why is it significant?
Historically, it is significant as a representative example of an early general store that demonstrates the development of the 'new' Clyde township that established around the railway station after its opening in 1889. It is also significant as a representative example of an early post office that illustrates the establishment of mail services during the late nineteenth century. (AHC criteria A4 and D2)
Socially, it is significant for its strong associations with the local community as an important public/commercial building that has been an informal meeting place in Clyde for over 100 years, which contributes to the identity of the township. (AHC criterion G1)
Aesthetically, although it is much altered, it remains nonetheless an important local landmark on a prominent corner that contributes to the historic character of the Clyde Township precinct. (AHC criterion E1)

Clyde General Store & Post Office - Physical Description 1
The Clyde General Store and Post Office is a single storey weatherboard building. It comprises:
- A central section with a transverse gabled corrugated iron roof that incorporates a front verandah. The front door is placed off centre and is flanked by two large multipaned windows.
- At the Oroya Grove corner is a small projecting gabled section, which is built to both street boundaries. This is possibly part of the original structure or an early addition. There is a small four paned window in the Railway Road elevation.
- At the opposite end is a skillion roof section, which appears to be a later addition to the two other sections. The window in the front elevation is a tripartite double hung sash with multi-paned upper panels.
The store and post office is situated opposite the site of the former railway station and in proximity to the public hall and church, further to the west.Clyde General Store & Post Office - Physical Conditions
