Statement of Significance
As is stated in Ken Scarlett's book, "Australian Sculptors", (1) on page 119, `It may make a very doubtful claim to being called sculpture, but it can without doubt claim more spectators than any piece of sculpture in Melbourne'. From the early 1930's the work captured the attention of the press and of the general public and very quickly became widely known. Along with Cook's Cottage, also in the Fitzroy Gardens, `The Fairies Tree' would be visited by a great number of tourists, as well as residents of Melbourne. It has taken on a sentimental significance which ensures that the work will be preserved as long as possible (making allowance for its vulnerable position, exposed to the elements).

Ola Cohn published two books relating to the work, The Fairies Tree, circa 1932 and More About the Fairies Tree, 1933, which were very popular and helped publicise it amongst a wide audience.
