Statement of Significance
The relief panels are of local significance on aesthetic, historical and social grounds. Within the City of Melbourne there have been very few commissions for contemporary sculpture and remarkably few works were installed during the 1950s and 60s. The relief panels were commissioned by Pacific Dunlop Pty Ltd for the remodelled building at 108 Flinders Street in 1968 for a cost of $12,000. In line with their policy at the time, Pacific Dunlop chose a young artist - Pasquale Marinelli was 22. This site-specific sculpture has been skifully designed, relates well to the building and enhances the streetscape, in an area where there are very few items of visual interest.
