Statement of Significance
The Victoria carpark, designed by noted architect Marcus Barlow, and completed in 1939, is significant at a State level as the first multi-level commercial carpark to be built in Melbourne, and the precursor to a large number of such structures built in the 1950s and 1960s. Its construction reflects the growing importance of the motorcar, and the need for large-scale parking facilities to be provided in the city area. It is also unique when compared to later carpark structures, in that the exterior facades give the appearance of an office building (in a simple streamlined moderne style) rather than reflecting the primary use of the building.
