Statement of Significance
A four-manual organ of 45 stops built by the leading German organbuilder Jurgen Ahrend in 1978-80. This was the first major organ in Australia to be built along historical principles, as influenced by the North-German organbuilding school of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It was also the largest instrument built by Ahrend at the time of its completion. The organ has been widely used for recitals and lectures and has been of great importance in the revival of authentic performance practices in Australia.
