Statement of Significance
The Port Melbourne Car Shed (1890) is of historic and architectural significance at a State level as the most intact car shed of Melbourne's former cable tram system, the most extensive cable tram system in the world operated by a single authority. It contains the sole surviving in situ remnants of tracks of the cable tram system. Designed by architects Twentyman and Askew for the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company, it is typical of the form and construction of their cable tram buildings.
