Statement of Significance
History: The shed opened in 1885 as the depot for cable trams of the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company's Richmond Line. Directly linked to the power supply of the Cable Tram Engine House, north-east corner of Bridge Road and Hobble Street, Richmond, it ceased to function when the cable system terminated in 1927. It was an essential component of public transport, housing the trams servicing an area of heavy population, industrial and commercial activity.
Significance: This cable tram shed was the first to open in Melbourne and is the only surviving shed. It introduced a network reputedly more extensive than any other on the international scene, including the United States. It is of strong significance. Its considerably aesthetic appeal is enhanced by its setting, with parkland and the rhythm of the Yarra River to the rear, also the Yarra cycle track and the sweep of the Bridge Road, Hawthorn Bridge.
