Statement of Significance
The Vaucluse Convent School complex, designed by architect G.W. Vanheems and constructed in stages from 1897 to 1904, is architecturally and historically significant at a state level.
Architecturally, the complex is a substantially intact and unusually coherent grouping of Victorian and Edwardian religious buildings, achieved through a consistency of materials and high quality workmanship. The convent has a particularly large and elaborate example of a cast iron verandah. The building also has unusual features particularly the gabled portico entrance with its Gothic arch and statuary niche, and the gothic pointed windows of the main facade.
Historically, the Vaucluse Convent School is important as the founding convent for the Sisters of the Faithful Companions of Jesus (the FCJ order) in Australia.
