Statement of Significance
The Ballarat Town Hall is the third Town Hall in Ballarat. It was constructed in 1870 to the designs of Architects J J Lorenz and H R Caselli (Interiors), the 1860 second Town Hall (Police Court) being incorporated in the new building but refaced . The symmetrical facade, decorated with a trabeated system of pilasters, is dominated by the dome roofed clock tower, which has a peal of bells and pedimented end towers with fan-shaped windows.
Ballarat Town Hall is an important building in the streetscape and townscape of the City. It is a local landmark with considerable historical associations and is of considerable architectural importance. The building is one of the earliest very substantial town halls in the State and is one of the very few with a central clock tower. Ballarat Town Hall is believed to be one of a few in the world with a peal of bells. The detailing of the corner towers is most unusual. Parts of the interior are intact.
Ballarat Town Hall has been extended several times and altered many times. The building is reasonably intact.
