Statement of Significance
Gundowring Station was established in 1838 by C H Barbour. Barbour married his first cousin, Mary Hume (niece of Hamilton Hume) in 1845 and held the property until his death in 1882. The homestead probably dates from c. 1860. It comprises a principal two storey wing, a bathroom/water tower wing and a single storey brick service wing. The principal wing has a three bay entrance facade and is surrounded on three sides by a two storey timber verandah.
This is a fine example of a large early homestead and has had few alterations since it was originally constructed. The property is notable for its association with C H Barbour, a local pioneer, and the Hume family. The main wing is simply composed and has simple dignified interiors. The two storey verandah with its doric ground floor columns and paired first floor columns and balustrade is a distincitve feature. The homestead is picturesquely situated amongst mature trees and overlooks the Ovens River Plains.
It is possible that the ground floor windows were originally french doors. .
