Statement of Significance
The Castlemaine Library, constructed in 1857 to the design of A. Price, with subsequent additions in 1861 - 2, 1867, 1873, 1890 and 1893, is of historical and architectural significance at a state level.
The building is historically important as the earliest Mechanics' Institute in the Central Goldfields area. It is believed to be the only building of its type in this area to have been in continuous use as a library since its construction. The building is the second oldest building in Castlemaine's historic precinct, second only to the Telegraph Office.
The library is architecturally significant as a substantially intact building constructed in the Classical style.
