Statement of Significance
The Vaucluse is of considerable architectual and historical imoprtance for it survives as a rare example, if not the only example, of a private street remaining in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Richmond, with Fitzroy, was the first resedential area developed once the tiny settlement spread beyond what we now call the Central Business District. It was professional and businessmen who were attracted to the fashionable street, perchased atop richmond Hill. Here they were built their large homes during the 1870s- 1880s.
