Statement of Significance
Rare or localised:
Discovered in1975 by local field naturalist James Turner and identified by David Cameron, La Trobe University. This is the only know occurence in Victoria, with the next closest in Bega district, NSW. Symplocos thwaitesiiis normally a rainforest treeseen in tropical, sub-tropical and warm temperate rainforests, often in gullies.
The tree is located on the western side of the Snowy River at Wood Point, 14km north-west of Orbost.
