Rare or localised
There are few known examples of Ulmus x sarniensis in cultivation; the other examples occur at Kyneton Botanic Gardens, Moss Vale Park and Creswick Forestry School. This specimen is the best example and in excellent condition .
Ulmus once enjoyed much popularity in the UK where it was widely cultivated for street planting. However Dutch Elm Disease has now destroyed many of the mature trees. Ulmus minor 'Sarniensis' is a large tree with a dead straight trunk and a regular narrow pyramidal manner of growth. It attains a height of approx. 20 m. The crown is formed by sturdy short-spreading branches. The rough flakey bark, particularly in older specimens, is a characteristic feature. It has relatively small oval dark green leaves which turn yellow in the autumn.
