Statement of Significance
Horticultural value:
Contribution to landscape of historic garden
Two outstanding trees of a species much rarer in cultivation than originally thought. Most of the trees in cultivation are Platanus x acerifolia. The species name derives from its historical distribution eastward from the Balkans, where it was recognized in ancient Greek history and literature It is usuallly a single trunk tree with distinctive, flaky, brown-gray-cream bark, large maple-like leaves and spherical fruiting balls that persist into winter. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish from London plane and may hybridize with London plane without human intervention, thus creating further variation.
