DUNN'S REEF - History
The only battery erected at the mine appears to have been by the Dunn’s Reef Co. In September 1875 the Dunn’s Reef Company were reported at work with very fair prospects. A cross-cut has been put in at the 200-foot level, where the reef was struck, showing payable gold; but none had yet been crushed to test its value. [Mining Surveyors’ Reports, September 1875] The crushings from the mine were not great, e.g., 160 tons/40ozs. In September 1882, the Mines Department reported that Dunn’s Reef mines had been sold and the plant removed.DUNN'S REEF - Interpretation of Site
Late nineteenth century small scale quartz mine that retains no evidence of mining machinery. The site is dominated by a large open cut and the remains of a timber-framed loading ramp. In the gully below is a water dam, two sludge ponds and two puddling machine sites. The site does not have the the ability to demonstrate the basic blue print and operation of a small scale gold mine.

Heritage Inventory Significance: None
SiteCard data copied on 03/07/2024: A track leads north off Dunns Reef Track and runs to a large open cut. The open cut is partially filled with debris. There are also several bulldozed mullock paddocks and filled shafts in the area. To the west of the open cut are the remains of a loading ramp. At the base of the ramp is a rectangular leveled area measuring 13 x 6m, which contains ground that has been ripped up. In the gully below the battery site is a large water dam and a puddling machine site. To the south east, in the gully are two sludge ponds. On the southern side of the second pond is the remnants of another puddling machine.
