House, 42 Harold Matthews Road, BANYENA - Physical Description 1
'The Oaks', 42 Harold Matthews Road, Banyena, has a rural setting. The immediate surrounds to the house appear overgrown and consist of open grassed areas and some shrubbery.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, early 20th century homestead Bungalow styled house is characterised by a broad gambrel roof form that terminates into a broken back encircling verandah. There is a rear gabled roof that projects at the side that may be a later addition. These roof forms are clad in green painted galvanised corrugated iron. Two early brick chimneys with peeling paintwork adorn the roofline. These chimneys have soldier course tops which suggest that they were constructed in the 1920s or 1930s.
A feature of the design is the encircling verandah. It is supported by timber columns and has decorative timber brackets.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, and the timber framed double hung windows.
