Statement of Significance
The Concongella Hall, 71 Concongella School Road, Concongella, has significance as an important social centre for the local community, and as a predominantly intact example of an unusual postwar Regional Modern styled building. Constructed in c.1960-61 to a design by the Shire Engineer, N.H. Cottman, the building appears to be in fair condition when viewed from a distance.
The Concongella Hall is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a predominantly intact postwar Regional Modern style. These qualities include the shallow pitched gable roof form, together with the tapered walls and corner porch with a simple timber post on the angle. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the vertically clad galvanised corrugated iron wall construction, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, broad eaves with exposed timber rafters, shallow and elongated ventilators on the roof ridge, and the timber framed windows.
The Concongella Hall is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with community interest and development in 1960-61, which led to the construction of this building at that time. It also has associations with the Shire Engineer, Norm Cottman, who prepared the design.
The Concongella Hall is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by the local community for cultural and recreational reasons.
Overall, the Concongella Hall is of LOCAL significance.

Concongella Hall, 71 Concongella School Road, CONCONGELLA - Physical Description 1
The Concongella Hall, 71 Concongella School Road, Concongella, has a rural setting nearby the Concongella Primary School. It has rudimentary open grassed surrounds bound by a post and wire fence.
The single storey, vertical galvanised corrugated iron, postwar Regional Modern styled Concongella Hall is characterised by a shallow pitched gable roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron and having shallow elongated ventilators along the ridge line. Of particular interest are the tapered walls, and elevated nature of the design, timber framed windows and doors, exposed timber rafters and the corner porch supported by a simple timber post on the angle. A steel framed tank stand with timber deck and recent round water tank are situated at one end of the hall, while at the other end appears to be a skillion addition.
The design of the Concongella Hall appears to have emanated from postwar architectural developments. After World War 2, the International style had a world-wide impact, and the salient features of this style were transformed into regional designs that were simple, light and fresh with an unpretentious elegance.
The first regional interpretation of modern architecture was published in Robin's Boyd's Victorian Modern in 1947, and the style also included low-pitched roof forms and simple geometry.
COMPARATIVE
Apperly, Irving and Reynolds in A Pictorial Guide to Identifing Australian Architecture (pp.218-221) provide a brief overview of postwar Melbourne Regional architecture. While there is no direct comparison with the Concongella Hall in this publication, it does reveal similar details in design and construction with contemporary buildings including (but not limited to):
Melbourne Grammar School boatshed, Yarra Embankment, Melbourne, c.1953;
House, Frankston, 1952,
House, Ivanhoe, 1956.
