Two storey shop, 134 Main Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The building at 134 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual significance of the predominantly Victorian and interwar streetscape.
The narrow, symmetrical, two storey, rendered brick, Victorian styled building is characterised by a simple rectangular parapet with a projecting moulded stringcourse at its base. The first floor has two early shallow-arched timber framed double hung windows with moulded architraves. The building corners are accentuated by early rendered quoinwork. Immediately below the windows is a projecting stringcourse and title panel (that reads "Stawell Total Music) which are flanked by projecting incised rectangular blocks supported by early paired consoles.
An introduced skillion verandah clad in galvanised corrugated steel and supported by large timber columns separates the first and ground floors. The ground floor shopfront has been altered and is characterised by introduced timber framed shopfront windows and double timber and glazed doors, with large tile surrounds.
Beyond the main facade is a two storey hipped roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron. There are early brick walls (with introduced overpainting) and the side walls have parapets. It has an early dominant unpainted brick chimney and early timber framed double hung windows.
Of further interest is the early, lower hipped roof residential wing with galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding and early brick wall construction (recently overpainted). It has an early dominant painted brick chimney, side skillion verandah supported over an elevated and basement level by square timber columns and a capped timber balustrade that has replaced an earlier balustrade. There are early shallow arched timber framed double hung windows and early door openings to both the elevated and basement levels. A more recent single storey brick shop completes the rear of the site.
