Statement of Significance
What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The building at 144 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the shopfront has been greatly altered, the remnant brick parapet and rear face brick parapet walls, pitched roof form, brick chimney and window openings (but not the recent brown brick building at the very rear) are those particular elements that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area.
Opportunities may be available for the appropriate reconstruction of the 19th century facade through an historical photograph held by the Stawell Historical Society. Although largely a photograph of the Childe Bros./C. Hunt and Sons grocers, bakers and hardware store, to the far right is evidence of the original parapet, scrollwork surmounting the parapet, and skillion verandah that once projected at the front.
