Statement of Significance
What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The building at 152 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the shopfront has been greatly altered, the remnant brick parapet and details including the shield motifs on the parapet piers, window leadlighting above the shopfront and rear gable roof form, gable parapet with flanking flat side parapets, and the unpainted brick wall construction (but not the recent flat roofed brick section at the very rear) are those particular elements that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area.
Opportunities may be available for the appropriate reconstruction of parts of the 19th century facade through an historical photograph held by the Stawell Historical Society. A photograph of William Laxton's Boot factory shows the original parapet form and detailing, and verandah construction and proportions, together with shopfront details.
