Statement of Significance
The house known as 'Carinya' at 25 Shirreff Street, Stawell, has significance as a predominantly intact example of the Victorian style. Possibly built in the late 19th century, the house appears to be in good-fair condition when viewed from the street.
The house known as 'Carinya' at 25 Shirreff Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is possibly associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th century and it is demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form, together with the hipped ogee form verandah that projects towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops, narrow eaves with paired timber brackets, paterae and panelling, central timber framed front doorway with sidelights and highlights, timber framed double hung windows, timber verandah posts and the decorative cast iron verandah brackets and valances. The front timber picket fence also contributes to the significance of the place.
Overall, the house known as 'Carinya' at 25 Shirreff Street is of LOCAL significance.

The house known as 'Carinya' at 25 Shirreff Street, Stawell, has a rudimentary garden setting comprising open grassed areas, some roses a the front and side trees. The front is bound by a timber picket fence that is approximately 1200 mm high.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, together with a hipped ogee form verandah that projects towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Two early brick chimneys (now painted) with multi-corbelled tops adorn the roofline. Narrow overhangs with paired timber brackets, paterae and panelling are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the front verandah. It is supported by square timber columns with projecting capitals and has decorative cast iron brackets and valances. The concrete verandah floor has been introduced.
Other early features of the design include the central timber framed front doorway with sidelights and highlights, and the flanking timber framed double hung windows.Heritage Study and Grading
