Statement of Significance
The house at 30 Sloane Street, Stawell, makes a significant architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly late 19th and early 20th century residential area. This house has significance as an intact example of a Victorian Italianate style. Built in the late 19th century, the house has associations with the Mahnke family, and particular Gustav Mahnke, German immigrant and local Stawell baker who served as a Councillor (including a term as Mayor) with the Borough of Stawell between 1900 and 1914. Mahnke's four daughters also appear to have operated the Bakery. This house appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 30 Sloane Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although it appears to have been extended at the side towards the rear, it still demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian Italianate style. These qualities include the hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with the faceted bay and convex verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, brick wall construction, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, brick chimneys with corbelled tops, modest eaves, segmentally arched portico in the verandah, verandah columns and decorative cast iron valances, brackets and arched infill, timber framed double hung windows with shallow-arched heads, timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, and the four panelled timber door.
The house at 30 Sloane Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this house has associations with the Mahnke family. Gustav Mahnke was a German immigrant and local baker and caterer, who served as Councillor (including a term as Mayor) with the Borough of Stawell between 1900 and 1914. Mahnke's four daughters also appear to have operated the Bakery from 1914.
Overall, the house at 30 Sloane Street is of LOCAL significance.

House, 30 Sloane Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The house at 30 Sloane Street, Stawell, is set in a predominantly intact residential streetscape with visual connections to late 19th and early 20th century Victorian, Edwardian/Federation and interwar Bungalow styled houses with well-landscape gardens. This house has a typical front setback for the area, with open grassed areas, perimeter flower beds and some mature shrubbery. There is a brick pedestrian path and open palisade and capped solid timber paling fences form the front boundary. These fences are approximately 1300 mm and 1500 mm high respectively.
The asymmetrical, single storey, painted brick, Victorian Italianate styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with a faceted bay and convex verandah that project towards the street frontage. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Towards the rear of the house at the side appears to be a later addition, which also has a hipped roof and painted brick wall construction, together with a large arched window opening.
Early brick chimneys with corbelled tops adorn the roofline, while modest overhangs are features of the eaves.
Early features of the design include the front verandah with its segmentally arched portico verandah columns and decorative cast iron valances, brackets and arched infill. Other early features include the timber framed double hung windows with shallow-arched heads, and the timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, and a four panelled timber door.
