HAMS LANE FARM OUTBUILDINGS - History
Hams used to live there somewhere, they moved away (?). Ernel Ham died a few years ago (1999).Heritage Inventory Description
HAMS LANE FARM OUTBUILDINGS - Heritage Inventory Description
Stables, consisting of a three-sided stone and brick structure. Walls are of random stone construction, using small basalt field stones, set in lime mortar. The door and window sills, lintels and jambs are of hand-made brick. Attached to the open side is a timber and galvanised iron structure, open along the north side. Post are rough-hewn. The floor is stone paved. To the north is a second structure, of identical construction (using random masonry and brick). It consists of a single room, with a wide doorway in the north wall. The south wall has either collpased or was completely open. Just to the west of this structure is a large, circular cistern or well. Between the two structures are traces of stone walls (possibly animal pens), wooden posts and stone lined, cobbled pathway.
There appears to be little of archaeological significance at this site, although there may be some in situ archaeological deposits. Further investigation may provide evidence for early farming in this area. The style of construction of these structures, and of the buildings at the nearby site, appear to be distinctive and unusual.
