Macarthur War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Macarthur War Memorial is located on the corner of High and Heckfield Streets within a garden reserve. Originally erected between 1920-21 to commemorate the First World War, inscriptions were added for the Second World War. Consisting of a four tiered granite obelisk with flagpole, the inscription reads, "Erected by the Residents of Macarthur and District to the memory of the brave boys who made the Supreme Sacrifice in the Great War 1914-1919." Twenty names are listed beneath the following verse:
"We can but honour, cherish, bless
Our sacred names
No words express the measure of
Our thankfulness to you our dead."
The south-east side of the obelisk is inscribed: "To the Memory of the brave boys who made the Supreme Sacrifice in the 2nd World War 1939-1945". Beneath which nine names are listed. Around the 1970s or 1980s, a tradition began of planting a rose for each soldier who had died. This tradition led to the creation of the extensive rose garden that exists today.
