Bairnsdale Rowing Club Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Bairnsdale Rowing Club was founded on 11th November 1872 with Joseph Day as President. The first regatta in March 1873 drew a crowd of four hundred people. A boatshed was then erected in 1888. After 1953, the Annual Regattas did not continue and the Club was disolved in 1965, with the boatshed demolished the following year.
In October 1936, a monument was unveiled by Albert Eli Lind MHR, Minister for Lands and Forests. It comprises of a memorial obelisk dedicated to the fifty-seven enlisted and fallen members of the Bairnsdale Rowing Club, who served with the AIF in the First World War.
