Maryborough War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Maryborough Soldiers Memorial, in front of the post office on Clarendon Street, commemorates the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. The memorial comprises of a metal soldier, atop a stone obelisk, with bronze plaques that list the names of servicemen and women. It was erected for the Women's Patriotic League in 1926. The figure was sculpted by Margaret Baskerville, who is quoted by Margaret A. Rose in her book 'Victorian Artists': "He gazes at the enemy as he loads his gun, but his face is sad. The Australian soldier is not a man fond of taking life, but he had his duty to perform. That is what I have tried to portray in his face."
