RIDGE ROAD WELL - History
In 1836, a member of the Port Phillip Association, Joseph Gellibrand, crossed and named the Plenty River, and reported favourable grazing land. Soon after, squatters established large sheep runs in the Plenty Valley. By the end of 1838, Robert Hoddle, Chief Surveyer for Port Phillip, had completed the survey of the Parishes of Toorourrong and Yan Yean. The current property (65 Ridge Road) formed part of Section V in the Toorourrong Parish, which was purchased in 1839 by Thomas Wills. Wills' land surrounded what would later become the Whittlesea Village Reserve, and leased his estate to tenant farmers.
In 1853, the Whittlesea Village Reserve was surveyed by Robert Mason. Wills' land surrounding Whittlesea was sold for subdivision in 1886. Land Title Data indicates the activity area once formed a large pastoral property, which has been subdivided into the current individual properties the 1970s. The activity area has been previously used for agricultural and grazing purposes, and is currently used to graze horses
