Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
The property name 'Karoomba' has been informally changed from the incorrect name, 'Karooma' on the original heritage citation, from information provided by the current owner. The updated details are provided informally at this stage, as the citation has not been subject to formal change as part of a planning scheme amendment.
'Karoomba' was built in 1858 for Christopher Porter. It is significant as the home of one of Geelong's most noted architects. It was one of the first homes in the area west of Minverva Road and a rare survivor. It is of regional significance.

Residence "Karoomba" - Physical Description 1
'Karoomba' is a two storey brick and stuccoed house with a hipped and slated roof. The front elevation has two bay windows on the ground floor either side of the front door. Surrounding the door are simple pilasters. All the windows on this elevation are twelve pane sash. It is not clear from the existing photographs whether the house originally had a verandah or not. The earliest know photograph shows a verandah which appears too fussy to be the work of Christopher Porter. Perhaps the most unfortunate alteration to this home has been the insensitive subdivision plan which has left the public with a rear view of the house only. Other alterations include the addition of a simple verandah and a high brick fence.
